Five Albums in Heavy Rotation

After five months into working-from-home I can say that one of the nicer perks (besides extra sleep and sometimes going more then a month without gassing up the Celica) is being able to listen to a wide variety of music uninterrupted. My responsibilities at work have shifted away from talking to people on the phone, so I can now listen to an entire album without having to answer the phone.

Here are five albums I’ve been listening to in excess in the recent weeks:

The Allman Brothers
The Allman Brothers Band

A Decade of Hits 1969-1979
Here I am, getting closer to thirty, and I’m just now discovering The Allman Brothers and their high quality southern rock? So good! I got hooked on the song Jessica after watching reruns of Top Gear, and was curious about the rest of their music. What a great CD all the way through. Makes me want to take a road trip.

Muse

Black Holes and Revelations
I like Muse because they sound like what I wish Radiohead might sound like without all the beeps and boops and noise. I suspect their albums are meant to be listened to in single sittings, rather then in single songs. I like this CD, although not as much as Absolution which is excellent.

Petty
Tom Petty

Highway Companion
More great solo Tom Petty. His last solo disc Wildflowers is also super good all the way through. I just noticed that the cover of this album is kinda similar to the cover of the Muse album above. Eerie?

Ratatat

Classics
Kate and I are both listening to lots of Ratatat. It’s all instrumental rock, but with lots of electronic sampling. Very distinct sounding, and easy to listen to while working.

Sleater Kinney
Sleater-Kinney

The Woods
Solid rock from a recently-broken-up pacfic northwest band. I first heard of them while working for the campus radio station at FSC.

What does everyone out there like to listen to these days?

  2. Wow! Harleymaster! We should have invited you to the Mardi Gras party here at Common Fence Point! Abby Rhode is a Beatles playing fool of a band. They helped us with our fund raiser last night by donating their excellent performance! ‘Iwanna hold your hannnnnnnndddd!’ I’ll keep you guys in mind for next year. :)

  3. Ratatat-Classics: Good rhythm for sewing. Usually I prefer songs with lyrics, but this album is the exception to the rule.

The Avalanches-Since I Left You: Also has a good beat. It kind of has a 70’s pop feel to it, only it is good.

Cat Power-The Greatest- and lots of live recordings: Very mellow. I like to listen to this when I am stressed out.

Indigo Girls-Rites of Passage: I learned all the lyrics on this album when Kim and I drove back from Yellowstone Park together. It is still one of my favorite albums to sing along with at the top of my lungs.

Girl Talk-Night Ripper: This is kind of a guilty pleasure and I definitely wouldn’t say I recommend it to anyone. It is mash-ups of popular songs, lots of foul language and it is very bad to get a song stuck in your head, because trust me you don’t want to be singing this stuff out loud in public. Thats all I’ll say about that.

  4. hmmm, Alligator in the Elevator is the number one CD in preK. then
    Tony Bennet’s Duet
    Michael Buble’
Harry Connick, Jr the torch songs
    Monica Hart
    Linda Ronstadt with Nelson Riddle
and of course, all my yogic meditation music for mellow asanas and relaxation.
Any ideas for quelling the ihatethedentist anxiety blues??
    love momD xxoo

  5. Just envision putting your dentist in an elevator, with an alligator. Good luck tomorrow!

  6. Oooh, I have the Allman Brothers Band and the Sleater-Kinney album. They’re both good stuff when I need a change of pace from the ordinary trip-hop I’m used to. I’ve been a fan of the Allmans since back in the day, but I recently picked up the S-K album because I’m trying to get CDs of the bands I used to like in High School. I also bought Dinosaur Jr and Pavement. Ends up there’s a reason they were both one-hit wonders. I’ll have to check out Muse and Ratatat.
