Ted is twenty-nine months old

Posted by Patrick on September 1st, 2010

Ted is twenty-nine months old, plus a few days.  He’s recently taken up cooking, as seen in the photo below.  We hope that when he grows up, in addition to being a doctor and plumber and electrician, that he’ll also cook delicious meals for us whenever we come to visit.

Ted’s sporting the pre-buzz cut look in the above photo, but not in the one below.  Kate used some clippers and he looks very handsome with a short summer cut.

Here he’s looking at his picture dictionary (thanks!), which he reads almost daily in his quest for knowledge.  He’s been very into books recently, reading with Kate throughout the day and with me before bed.

With the picture dictionary, he’ll point to an object he knows and say ‘What’s that?’ to one of us.  We can either state what it is, ask him if he knows what it is or try and trick him (and then he responds with what it is).  I’m not sure why he does this… maybe some sort of reinforcement for him to hear it from someone else.  Just glad he’s picking up the lingo.

He’s also big into stating the letter that a word starts with, like “A is for airplane” and “M is for mom”.  He’s pretty good at guessing the correct letter, although “B” and “P” stump him occasionally.

Auntie Christine came for a visit recently and got to spend an action packed weekend with us, including a trip into Raleigh to see many North Carolina fire engines.  We’ll post more photos of that later this month.  Ted does love out-of-state company.

Auntie also treated us to a showing of Curious George Live, which was Ted’s first arena show.  He did really well.

Here’s Ted drawing with some chalk on the front stoop.  He hasn’t been coloring as much with crayons has he had been a few months ago (although he still does).  He also plays with playdough and does painting, mostly during the day when home with Kate.

Ted is twenty-eight months old

Posted by Patrick on August 2nd, 2010

Twenty-eight sounds like a high number.  Not as high as 36, though, which is the number of inches tall he is these days. He has grown almost an inch in two months!  We wonder if this is contributing to him having some trouble sleeping - He goes through sleep-resistant phases like this every once in awhile.

Speaking of sleep, he took his first solo nap on the couch.  He’s got some pretty stringent sleep requirements, and rarely (if ever) sleeps anywhere besides his bed, the car, or his pack-n-play.  This particular day he had skipped his usual nap time, and after a swim in the community pool, passed out.  Oh yes, we took a picture.

He’s got a lot to say when he’s awake.  In July he said things like:

“I’ve got a great idea! We could watch tv upstairs!”

“That sound like a plan?”

“ Gotta be quick.”

“I want to do things!”

“I did it!”

He just started using the word “page” instead of the word he really means. For instance, “Put that in the page,” (where page means bowl.) or “Can I ride on the page,” (where page is grass.).  He uses “page” for words he definitely knows, not sure why.

Ted loves adventure. This past month we headed up to New England for our Fourth of July vacation. We visited family, went to the zoo and the beach, swam in Auntie Kim’s pool, camped in her backyard, ate his first S’more, went to the parade, watched fireworks, went to Boston, rode the subway, went on the carousel in Boston Common, checked out the ducks in the Public Garden, and checked out the view from the top of the Prudential building!

We also went to the beach back in North Carolina. We took a day trip and checked out Fort Macon, went to Atlantic Beach, and checked out the Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.

Also:

  • He is very good at doing giant floor puzzles on his own.
  • He has also been playing memory match. He seems to really get it so far and it good at following the rules and taking turns.
  • He rode his first skateboard.
  • He is really into dinosaurs.

Ted is twenty-seven months old

Posted by Patrick on July 12th, 2010

We are pretty late in posting here.  Just pretend it’s June 30th. We were traveling on his monthaversery – another big road trip adventure, which we’ll post about soon.

Here’s Ted holding the a kitchen cabinet shut. I’m not sure why he’s doing it. (Kidding: we keep it child-proof-locked!)  Twenty-seven month old Ted is into jokes, humor, and shenanigans, as you can see by the look on his face.

Also, he’s had a haircut since this photo was taken, his third!  His curly hair is pretty complex to cut, according to Kate.

Here’s Ted with a giant praying mantis at a zoo & playground he went to in June with some friends.  His life, make no mistake, is pretty exciting.

The photo below shows him going down a giant leaf slide at the same playground.  He’s into stunts, this one.  Totally brave (unaware?) about heights.  He likes swimming, too.  He and Kate and some friends went to the ocean in June as well.  Ted still loves the water, be it kiddie pool, water table, or ocean.

The photo below shows Ted in his cardboard house, now decorated (thanks Gram G!) with all manor of transportation-themed cutouts.  He is still way into transportation, and whenever he sees two or more chairs he can line up, he makes a train out of them. Which is sometimes then a car. Or an airplane.

Speaking of numbers, his twenty-seventh month marked his acknowledgment of both the number 5 and 6, and that they belong in between 4 and 7.  Despite learning almost the entire alphabet, he still thought 5 and 6 were something his parents just randomly yelled to him while he was counting.

Ted is twenty-six months old

Posted by Patrick on June 2nd, 2010

A little late here.

Twenty-six month old Ted can walk down playground stairs, smile, and wave at the same time.  This makes him more coordinated than I am on most days.

(He’s here at his favorite playground in the town next to ours, during a visit from Grammie and Gramps.  They came down for Kate’s birthday and to visit Ted, too.  Pics coming soon.)

Speaking of moving about – Ted can throw and kick a ball with much more skill than last month.  He can even shoot his basketball into the 4′ basketball hoop! And this past weekend he peddled for a few feet on his tricycle.  This is very exciting news. It means eventually no more daddy hunched over pushing him around!  He’s got a lot more practice before he can hit the street on his own, though.  He’s dressed in the photo below in his construction worker pj’s.

Here’s Ted reading the Sunday funnies. He can’t read yet, but can point at many letters and tell you what they are.  When he speaks, he now describes things in much better detail, and can more accurately recall and explain the events of the day when asked “What did you do today?” and “Who was there?”.

And then there’s gender identification – as in, identifying your gender.  ”Are you a boy?”  and “Mommy is a girl!” are two phrases we have heard many, many times this month, followed by “Ted is a boy” and “Moses is a boy” and “Daddy is a boy!” over and over again. He’s pretty good at identifying someone’s gender (although not with 100% accuracy).

Other notable accomplishments:

- Tried and loved cranberry sauce.

- Asked for, ate, and loved frozen edamame soybeans.

- Sometimes, when prodded, he will count to ten and not skip 5 and 6.  Not always though.

- Has seen almost all of the movie “Cars” but gets a little freaked out by the tractor-cows.

- Was able to hold a telephone conversation with me.  Before he would remain entirely silent while anyone spoke on the phone with him… but the other day he talked back! He’d much rather skype you, though.

- Went to a toddler swimming class with Kate, and blew some bubbles in the water.  He’ll be way into aquatics when he gets older.

Ted is twenty-five months old

Posted by Patrick on April 30th, 2010

Ted is twenty-five months old, and is still somewhat confused by the whole sandwich thing, but we don’t sweat it, as he still eats lots of other healthy things. His palette didn’t expand all that much during April… unless you count the chocolate bunny on Easter.

Speaking of Easter, we also went to visit our fellow Yankee re-locators at Schimfamilyblog who cooked us a great meal and entertained us, and Ted got to play disc golf for the first time.  He threw pretty well for  a two year old, and only hit me a few times.

Speaking of sports – Ted loves them.  He and I went to a parent-tot sports class for a few Saturdays in April and Ted learned how to throw and catch a ball, as well as running with a football.  He’s also pretty obsessed with the idea of playing basketball, and mentions it frequently.

Ted helped us plant a tree this month too, right in our back yard.  It was a birthday gift from friends, and Ted was glad that it attracted birds right away.  During the planting process he dug a little dirt, dumped some dirt around the roots, and helped us water our new back yard tree. Check out that red North Carolina dirt… like digging through brick.

(Hey, check out how much our pine trees have grown since we planted them! )

Other notables from April:

* Ted had his first bubble bath, much to his joy.

* He finished up another round of Kindermusic class.  The singing and dancing continue at home.

* He had his 2 year checkup.  All his parts are in good working order.

* We attended the Maker Faire last weekend, and Ted got to see robot bugs and other cool nerdy things.

* He now says “I love you momma” and “I love you dadda” on his own. Pretty rad.
